Portal Frame structures are one of the most popular forms of construction for small to medium span industrial buildings.  They are efficient in material use but require accurate design and fabrication best suited to 3D CAD modelling and steel detailing. Portal Frames are therefore cost effective versatile structures.

Portal frames are generally defined as two-dimensional rigid frames with the basic characteristics of a rigid joint between beam and column. The primary objective of this form of design is to limit and reduce bending moment in the beams, which permits the frame to function as a single structural unit. The transfer of stresses from beams to columns produces a rotational movement at the foundations, which can be suppressed by the inclusion of a pin-hinge joint.
